Automatic Google Maps iFrame Blocker

You would like to use embedded Google Maps on your website, but you have to comply with the guidelines of the GDPR/DSGVO? Maybe you want to speed up your site and let the visitor load the map if it’s really necessary? This plugin automatically blocks embedded Google Maps for you.

Instead of a map, we’ll load a placeholder image to indicate that there is a map where users can interact with. To make this even more clear, we let you configure a text displayed to the visitor.

It’s important to block the communication between your visitors and the Google server for several reasons.
* Performance and loading time: There are tons of reasons why iFrames are bad for the performance of your site, blocking them on page load should help your site to load faster.
* Privacy and data protection: You can get into legal problems if the visitor has not given you his explicit consent to forward his data to any third party service (like Google).

These are the main reasons we developed this plugin, it solves these problems by finding Google maps completely automatically on your site and replacing them with our temporary placeholder that can be activated by the visitor.

  1. Log in to /wp-admin.
  2. Visit Plugins -> Add New
  3. Search for ‘AWEOS Google Maps iframe load per click’
  4. Download the plugin.
  5. Activate the plugin.
  6. Look at your new Google Maps

Thank you for the plugin. It is working out of the box with different installations. What would be nice: Either remove the "Map Privacy" Menu entry completely or give more settings there, like unload the css file and change the svg file + change the text. Otherwise please remove the menu item because it makes no sense at all. Thank you!!!

AWESOME! thank your for that. To make it work with The Events Calendar you just have to delete the API Key in the settings

My Theme has no Option to disable Google Maps at all, so it loads it on every Page. For me the installation of AWEOS Google Maps brings nearly 10 Seconds(!!!) less loading time. Thank you!

Plugin works fine for me! I give it 5 stars because it is eally something i really needed. Ideas for improvement:
  • Make the preview-screen responsive (This is important!).
  • Allow my own text
  • Allow to upload own preview image

Good start, will not work for all sites

Glad to see that someone is taking care of the GDPR compliant use of Google Maps. This plug-in is a good start, but there is room for improvement as well. It's important to realise that this plug-in will only work if you copy/paste the iframe HTML code through the sharing function of Google Maps. It will not work if you integrate a Google Map through a theme module or plug-in on your site. If you use one of these methods you have to rely on the theme/plug-in developers to make their theme/plug-in GDPR compliant. As a quick fix I'd love to have the opportunity to customise the message shown on the placeholder through the backend. And please: Do not add another main menu item to the backend for this, but place it under "Settings". Thanks!
