Important Note

This plugin is specifically designed for GDPR and IAB TCF v2.3 compliance. It does not currently support US privacy frameworks such as CCPA or CPRA, or other non-EU regional privacy regulations.

Why You Need a CMP

Under GDPR, ePrivacy, and similar regulations, publishers must obtain informed, recorded consent before loading non-essential cookies, trackers, or advertising vendors. A Consent Management Platform (CMP) is the tool that requests that consent, stores the user’s choices, and broadcasts them to your downstream partners in a standard, machine-readable format. Without one, ad and analytics revenue from EU users is legally at risk.

  1. From your WordPress admin, go to Plugins > Add New, search for Consent Management Platform, and click Install Now, then Activate. (Or upload the plugin ZIP directly via Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin.)
  2. Open the new Consent Management Platform menu in the WordPress sidebar. If you already have the ShareThis Share Buttons plugin installed, the settings live under the existing ShareThis menu instead.
  3. Configure the banner — set your publisher name, privacy policy URL, display region, colors, purposes, and any vendor exclusions.
  4. Click Update to publish the configuration. The consent banner will appear on your site within a few minutes.

What is GDPR?

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is a European regulation that gives EU citizens and residents greater control over their personal data and standardizes data-handling rules for any business that touches EU users.

Who has to comply with GDPR?

Any company established in the EU, plus any company anywhere in the world that processes personal data of EU residents.

What counts as “personal data”?

Any information that can directly or indirectly identify an individual. The data ShareThis collects through this plugin is limited to identifiers such as cookies and IP addresses — not emails, postal addresses, phone numbers, or national IDs.

What is a CMP?

A Consent Management Platform collects and stores user consent and communicates that consent status to the vendors operating on your site. It is configurable by the publisher and editable by the visitor at any time.

Is this plugin IAB-compliant?

Yes. The Consent Management Platform by ShareThis is built on the IAB Transparency & Consent Framework (TCF) v2.

Does the plugin keep the vendor list up to date?

Yes. The plugin loads the current IAB Global Vendor List directly from ShareThis at runtime, so additions, removals, and policy URL changes appear without a plugin update.

How long is personal data retained?

ShareThis retains usage data for up to 14 months from the date of collection. Cookies expire 13 months after they are last updated.

How do users opt out or request deletion?

Visitors can withdraw consent through the banner at any time, or contact privacy@sharethis.com. The full opt-out procedure is documented on the ShareThis privacy page.

Does installing this plugin make my site fully GDPR compliant?

This plugin gives you a fully functional, IAB-compliant consent mechanism — a required building block. Full GDPR compliance also depends on your privacy policy, internal data-handling practices, and any other vendors on your site. Please consult legal counsel for advice specific to your business.

How do I preview the banner from outside the EU?

Use any reputable VPN service to browse your site from an EU IP address. The banner will appear if your display setting is EU only.

Is the plugin compatible with the Google Analytics Dashboard plugin?

No. The Google Analytics Dashboard plugin is known to conflict with this CMP. The settings screen will warn you if both are active.
