Description

MarQira Uptime Monitor connects your WordPress website to WPCentrify, a website monitoring and management service that checks your site around the clock and emails you the moment it stops working.

Your website can go down at any time: a host outage, an expired domain, a broken update or a server error. Usually you only find out when a customer tells you. WPCentrify finds out first.

You need a WPCentrify account to use this plugin. Monitoring one website is free for ever. Until you connect the website with a code from your account, the plugin sends nothing anywhere.

What you get

  • Website monitoring every few minutes. WPCentrify checks your website from outside, the way your visitors reach it.
  • Downtime alerts by email. You are emailed when your website stops answering, and again when it is back, with how long it was down.
  • Uptime history. Your WPCentrify dashboard shows every outage and your uptime over time.
  • Smarter than a ping. The plugin reports in every few minutes, so WPCentrify can tell a server that is down from a website where only WordPress has stopped.

Manage multiple WordPress sites from one dashboard

Looking after more than one website? WPCentrify is built for agencies, freelancers and businesses that manage multiple WordPress sites. See the uptime of every site you look after in one dashboard.

Paid WPCentrify plans cover more websites and add tools for managing them, such as updates, backups, security and reports. Those come with the full WPCentrify plugin, which you download from your WPCentrify account; this plugin never installs or changes plugins. Learn more at wpcentrify.com.

What this plugin does not do

It only reports that your website is alive. It cannot update, install, activate, deactivate or delete anything; it does not sign anybody in, create users, take backups or change your pages; it adds nothing to your pages and records nothing about your visitors.

About WPCentrify

WPCentrify is the company that makes this plugin and runs the monitoring service. WPCentrify is an independent company and is not affiliated with or endorsed by WordPress.org or the WordPress Foundation.

External services

This plugin connects your website to WPCentrify (api.wpcentrify.com), the uptime monitoring service it exists to use. Nothing is sent before you connect the website with a connection code from your WPCentrify account, and nothing is ever sent about your visitors.

What is sent, and when:

  • When you press Connect: the connection code you pasted, your website’s address (home and site URL), and its WordPress, PHP and plugin versions, and whether it is a multisite network. WPCentrify answers with an identifier and a secret for the website, which are stored encrypted in your database.
  • Every few minutes while connected (the report): the website’s address and its WordPress, PHP and plugin versions. This is how WPCentrify knows the website and its WordPress are running.
  • About once a minute while connected (the liveness signal), only at the end of a request your website is already serving and only once WPCentrify has asked for it: the website’s identifier, a counter, the website’s clock, whether the last reports reached WPCentrify, whether WordPress’s scheduled tasks are running on time, whether WordPress is in maintenance mode, and the WordPress, PHP and plugin versions.
  • When you activate or deactivate the plugin while connected: that the plugin was switched on or off.

Every request is signed with the website’s secret, and the plugin only acts on replies signed by WPCentrify.

WPCentrify also contacts your website from its own servers: it loads your home page to check it is up, and it calls three addresses this plugin adds: /wp-json/marqira-uptime-monitor/v1/health-ping (which says only that the plugin is installed), /wp-json/marqira-uptime-monitor/v1/liveness (which answers only requests signed by WPCentrify), and /wp-json/marqira-uptime-monitor/v1/report-now (which also answers only requests signed by WPCentrify, and does one thing: sends the plugin’s usual report straight away, which is how the plugin learns at once that you removed the website from your account).

  • WPCentrify terms of service: https://wpcentrify.com/legal/terms/
  • WPCentrify privacy policy: https://wpcentrify.com/legal/privacy/
  1. Install and activate MarQira Uptime Monitor from Plugins Add New.
  2. Create a free account at app.wpcentrify.com if you do not have one.
  3. In WPCentrify, add your website and copy the connection code it shows you.
  4. In WordPress, go to Settings MarQira Uptime Monitor, paste the code and press Connect.

The website appears in your WPCentrify dashboard within a minute.

Do I need a WPCentrify account?

Yes. The checking is done by WPCentrify’s servers; the plugin is how your website and your account recognise each other. One website is free for ever.

Does it send anything before I connect it?

No. Nothing is sent until you press Connect with a code from your account.

What does it send about my visitors?

Nothing. The plugin sends nothing about visitors and sets no cookies.

Will it slow my website down?

No. The report is a few hundred bytes. Where your server allows it, it is sent after a page has already been delivered, so nobody waits for it; otherwise it is sent by WordPress’s own scheduled tasks.

How do I stop monitoring?

Go to Settings MarQira Uptime Monitor and press Disconnect, or deactivate the plugin. You can also remove the website in your WPCentrify dashboard: the plugin then disconnects itself within seconds, and its settings page says the website was removed.

What happens when I delete the plugin?

Everything it stored is removed from your database. WPCentrify keeps the website’s uptime history in your account; connecting the website again later, with a new code, picks the same history back up.

I moved to the full WPCentrify plugin. What happens to MarQira Uptime Monitor?

Once the full WPCentrify plugin is active and connected, MarQira Uptime Monitor stops reporting by itself and says on its settings page that you can delete it. The full plugin does everything MarQira Uptime Monitor did.
